The Story of An Average Engineer - How Perseverance Can Be Your Superpower
The Weight of Average
For most of my life, I labeled myself as average. I was just an average student in Bhubaneswar, attending an average college, studying to become an average engineer, and ultimately living an average life. Yet, a pivotal shift occurred along my journey, prompting me to question what “average” truly meant and how I could redefine my trajectory.
The Race We All Run
Throughout my education, I sensed I was participating in a race that most of my peers were also running. However, it never weighed on me. In school, my brother’s diligent efforts inspired me to take my studies more seriously. It was during my 10th grade that I made a conscious decision to work harder. Following his footsteps, I poured countless hours into my studies, regardless of my interest in the subjects. The results spoke volumes—93% in the CBSE boards was a significant achievement that opened doors for me.
A Journey Through Higher Education
As a result of my hard work, I secured a spot at CET Bhubaneswar, which, while decent at the time, was far from prestigious on a national level. My college experience was undeniably average. I didn't gain much knowledge, save for the incredible friendships I formed along the way. My grades, extracurriculars, and experiences all echoed that “average” label—an identity that seemed to follow me wherever I went.
Finding My Rhythm: The Power of Music
Yet, there was a turning point during the vibrant "great Indian rock music phase." Joining a band and competing in a national contest called Antaragni at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, was nothing short of exhilarating.
Challenging the Norm
No band from Odisha had ever stepped onto that stage, and we were just a group of average engineers driven by a shared love for music. We did what we knew best—worked tirelessly, practiced relentlessly, and arrived at Kanpur fully expecting to lose. To our astonishment, we took home the victory. That moment ignited a realization within me: diligence and perseverance were my true superpowers.
Embracing New Opportunities Abroad
My journey as an “average engineer” continued, but I yearned for more. I decided to go abroad for my master's degree. With no savings to rely on, I explored my options and discovered that many German universities offer free education for international students.
Harnessing the Superpower of Hard Work
Once again, my superpower came into play. I embraced the challenge wholeheartedly, working hard to get accepted into The University of Kaiserslautern. Throughout this journey, my lack of an IIT badge or experience in big tech companies never hindered my growth. The struggles I faced because of my background ultimately allowed me to forge meaningful connections, fostering a sense of empathy that drives me today.
