How I Did a Master’s in AI in Germany with Just 15K INR in Savings And No Study Loan
When my friends were taking student loans of ₹50 lakh ($60k) or more to study in the USA, I had less than ₹15,000 (~$200) in savings. Still, I pursued a master’s degree in AI—without taking a loan.
So, how did I manage to study abroad without money?
Discovering Affordable AI Education in Germany
In 2013, a friend, Karim Baig, told me, “You can go to Germany and do your master’s for free!” At first, I was skeptical, but after two years of research, I realized that while it wasn’t entirely free, it was highly affordable.
Many top-tier German universities charge only €150-350 (₹14k-₹35k) per semester, providing students with:
✅ Free train and bus passes
✅ Subsidized meals
✅ Scholarship opportunities
The Visa Challenge: Securing ₹7-8 Lakh for a Blocked Account
To get a student visa, I needed to deposit €8,500 (~₹7-8 lakh) into a blocked account, which would be released as a monthly stipend. This was meant to ensure financial security and prevent students from struggling to afford basic needs.
Funding My AI Education Without Loans
My father had financial constraints, but he reassured me: “You start applying, I will arrange for the money.” He had no plan, but he pulled it off—just like he had done countless times before.
In 2015, I got into University of Kaiserslautern (TU-KL), and within three months, I started working. I saved like my life depended on it. From that moment, I never asked my dad for money again.
Despite balancing work, studies, and life in a country where I barely spoke the language, I managed to enjoy my student years to the fullest.

Nine Years Later
✅ My parents have traveled across Europe.
✅ They’ve explored more of India than ever before.
✅ They now support charities they previously couldn’t afford.
✅ Soon, they will move into a house my brother and I are building for them.

Why I Did It—And What I Learned
My father never asked for anything in return. Maybe some psychologist would say I was compensating for something, but the truth is—I had a dream of studying abroad, and he took on the burden of making it happen.
Parents like mine push their own desires so far away that it starts to feel like they don’t have any. Maybe this is my way of reminding them—things are better now. It’s okay for them to have dreams too.
And just like my dad, I never had a plan—I just pulled it off.
